The Ownership Self-Assessment
Five questions every IP-dependent business should be able to answer.
Introduction
These are the five questions the Ownership Layer™ framework asks. Answer them honestly. Where you hesitate is where an ownership gap may already exist.
The five questions
1. What does the business believe it owns?
A yes requires an actual asset inventory, not merely a list of registrations.
2. What evidence supports that ownership?
A yes requires documents you could produce in a diligence data room within a week.
3. What rights are limited by contracts, contributors, vendors, platforms, or AI-tool terms?
A yes requires having read the terms you operate under, including terms accepted when those tools were adopted or updated.
4. Can the rights be transferred, licensed, enforced, or used across markets?
A yes requires knowing this before a counterparty asks.
5. Where could stronger ownership discipline change the commercial outcome?
A yes requires connecting ownership to the deal you want next, not the dispute you had last.
Where this leaves you
If any of them gave you pause, the gap is worth examining before your next transaction examines it for you.
